An innovative set of technologies, known as wave energy converters (WECs), can capture this movement of ocean and sea waves to generate electricity, with energy output depending on wave speed, height, frequency and water density.
The world’s largest untapped source of energy
With a staggering global resource, wave energy has the potential to be the largest source of energy from our seas. The theoretical global potential of wave energy is 29,500 tera-watt hours of electricity every year – in other words, enough to power all of Europe ten times over.
Today, scaled and full-size wave energy prototypes are being tested at sea. The most advanced device developers are planning and building the first wave energy farms, with multiple devices working alongside each other.
